These dramatic, solid 22K gold granulated and domed earrings feature 22k gold domes set within a twisted gold wire frame. Dangling from the domes are luscious rose tinted Akoya saltwater pearls and Aquamarine carved melon beads. Inspired by an ancient Roman drop earring design. Pure 24K gold is alloyed in my shop; mixed with a very small amount of other metals to make it malleable and slightly less soft, while still retaining its beautiful, brilliant, yellow color. The gold domes are fabricated from my milled 18 gauge sheet and soldered in place. Wire is drawn and then twisted. Hundreds of tiny little matching granules are made over the course of several weeks. Granulation is an ancient technique that was utilized in many early Roman, Greek, Egyptian and Byzantine jewelry. The tiny granules are painstakingly placed on a gold back sheet and then fused (no solder) into place.
Two Akoya cultured saltwater pearls hang from each earring. These were graded AA+ based on GIA standards by a graduate gemologist certified in pearls. Along with the pearls, melon cut Aquamarine beads are hung from each earring. This pair of earrings weighs just under 1/2 ounce of pure 22K gold. The ear-wires I alloy into 20K for added strength. Signed on the back. Earrings measure: 2 inches (54mm) long 3/4 inch (21mm) wide Domes are 1/2 inch (14mm) Ships in 7 days.
